About Norfund

Norfund facilitates economic growth and poverty reduction by investing risk capital in profitable businesses in developing countries.
The message is loud and clear: “Sustained economic growth reduces poverty. The link is equally clear between economic growth and strong private investment.” (Report to the UN secretary-general, Unleashing entrepreneurship - making business work for the poor, March 2004)

Norfund is a Norwegian development financial institution (DFI) which invests risk capital in profitable private enterprises in most countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Balkans. Any country with a GNI per capita of less than USD 6055 is eligible for these investments (DAC List of ODA Recipients). Norfund will contribute to the realisation of viable projects which balance economic, social and environmental considerations. Read more about Norfund's business integrity.

The institution can provide equity, quasi-equity and loan financing for business expansions, corporate restructurings, management buy-ins and buy-outs and new business ventures. It invests in most sectors of the economy, providing the investment offers opportunities for growth, profitability and sustainable development.

Norfund has established two global subsidiaries to increase the scope and scale of its investments. Aureos Capital is Norfund's joint venture fund management company, while SN Power Invest is its strategic joint venture in the renewable energy sector.

THE MAKEDA FUND

The Makeda Fund was jointly established by SEAF and NOI Consulting to support the development of women-owned and women-managed SMEs in Africa. The Makeda Fund will focus predominantly (but not exclusively) on investments in women-owned and women-managed businesses. The Fund will have Nigeria as its core geographic focus, but also will invest a portion of its capital in other countries in the sub-Saharan Africa region.

The Makeda Fund aims at supporting the growth of women-owned and women-run businesses in Africa. By investing in women-owned businesses in Africa, the Makeda Fund hopes to spur wealth creation and employment generation. We believe that supporting such businesses is important: not only because they are currently an underserved segment of the market, but also because they offer promising opportunities for value creation for both investors and women entrepreneur

Emerging Capital Partners (ECP)
Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) is an international private equity firm focused on investing across the African continent. The firm is the first private equity group to raise over US$1.2 billion to invest exclusively in African companies[1]. The firm's investors are uncorrelated to the U.S. and other global economies. By the third quarter of 2008, the firm had invested in approximately 50 companies, exited from about 20, and achieved an average return of three times its initial investments[2].
While the African continent is generally overlooked in terms of investment opportunities, ECP has seen a high demand for capital in African markets, where the demand for investment far outweighs the supply. In addition, the past several years have seen positive shifts, such as government movement to open-market philosophies and improved macro-economic fundamentals. ECP has found that these factors are enabling Africa to become a vibrant marketplace with a defined opportunity set for private equity investment.
